Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
Data connections link Tableau to your data source. They are the first step because without connecting to data, you cannot create reports or visualizations. Starting with the right connection ensures your analysis is accurate and up to date.
When you want to create a new dashboard from your company sales data stored in Excel.
When you need to refresh your report with the latest data from a database.
When you want to combine data from multiple sources like a spreadsheet and a cloud database.
When you start a new project and need to bring in data before building charts.
When you want to explore data interactively by connecting Tableau to live data.
Steps
Step 1: Open Tableau Desktop
- Start screen
You see options to connect to data sources like files and servers

Step 5: Click Sheet 1 to start building visualizations
- Bottom tab
Tableau opens a blank worksheet with your data ready to use
Before vs After

Settings Reference
Connection Type
📍 Connect pane on start screen
Choose where your data is stored to connect Tableau
Default: No default, user selects
Data Refresh
📍 Data Source tab > Refresh button
Update your data connection to get the latest data
Default: Manual refresh
Join Type
📍 Data Source tab when linking tables
Define how tables combine data for analysis

Common Mistakes
Skipping data connection and trying to build charts without data
Tableau needs data connected first to create visualizations
Always start by connecting to your data source before building reports
Connecting to the wrong data file or outdated source
Leads to incorrect or stale analysis results
Verify the data source is current and correct before connecting
Not setting proper joins between tables
Can cause missing or duplicated data in reports
Review and adjust join types on the Data Source tab carefully
Summary
Data connections are the first step to bring your data into Tableau.
Choosing the right data source and setting joins correctly ensures accurate analysis.
Without a proper connection, you cannot create or refresh visualizations.
