First Tableau visualization - Step-by-Step Guide

This feature helps you create your very first chart in Tableau. It solves the problem of turning raw data into a clear visual story that anyone can understand.

Steps
Step 1: Open Tableau Desktop
- Start screen
Tableau opens and shows options to connect to data
💡 Use sample data if you don't have your own yet
Step 2: Click 'Connect to Data' and select your data source
- Connect pane on the left
Your data loads and shows in the Data Source tab
Step 3: Click the 'Sheet 1' tab at the bottom
- Tabs area below the canvas
A blank worksheet opens ready for visualization
Step 4: Drag a dimension field (like 'Category') to Columns shelf
- Columns shelf at the top of the worksheet
Column headers appear on the canvas representing categories
Step 5: Drag a measure field (like 'Sales') to Rows shelf
- Rows shelf at the top of the worksheet
Bars appear showing sales amounts for each category
Step 6: Click 'Show Me' panel and select 'Bar Chart' if not already selected

Common Mistakes
