Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
This feature helps you choose how Tableau connects to your data. You can connect live to see real-time data or use an extract to work faster with a snapshot of your data.
When you want your dashboard to always show the latest sales numbers as they update.
When your data source is slow and you want faster report loading by using a snapshot.
When you need to work offline without a connection to the original data.
When your data changes often and you want to avoid manual refreshes.
When you want to reduce load on your database by using extracts.
Steps
Step 1: Connect to your data source
- Data Source page
Tableau shows the connection details and data preview
💡 Choose the correct data source type before proceeding
Step 2: Select Live or Extract option
- Top right corner of the Data Source page
Tableau sets the connection mode accordingly
💡 Live keeps data updated; Extract creates a snapshot

- Data Source page toolbar
Tableau prompts to save the extract file and starts data extraction
💡 Save extract file in an easy-to-find location
Step 4: Refresh extract when needed
- Data menu > Refresh All Extracts
Extract data updates to latest snapshot
💡 Schedule refreshes for automation if using Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud
