Introduction
Data Interpreter helps clean messy Excel or CSV files by automatically detecting and fixing common formatting issues. It makes your data ready for analysis without manual cleanup.
When your Excel file has extra header rows or notes above the actual data table
When your data contains merged cells or subtotals that confuse Tableau
When you want to quickly remove blank rows or columns from your data source
When your CSV file has inconsistent formatting that prevents proper import
When you want Tableau to automatically detect the main data table in a complex spreadsheet
Steps
Step 1: Connect to your Excel or CSV file
- Tableau start page → Connect pane → Microsoft Excel or Text file
The data preview appears in the Data Source tab showing the raw file content
Step 2: Click the checkbox to enable Data Interpreter
- Data Source tab, above the data preview area
Tableau processes the file and updates the preview to show cleaned data
💡 If the checkbox is not visible, your file type may not support Data Interpreter
Step 3: Review the cleaned data preview
- Data Source tab, data preview grid
You see the main data table without extra headers, blank rows, or notes
Step 4: Click the 'Review the results' link
- Below the Data Interpreter checkbox
A new window opens showing what Tableau removed or changed
