Filter shelf vs filter card in Tableau - Compared

Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
Filters help you show only the data you want in your Tableau views. The Filter shelf and Filter card both control filters, but they work differently. Knowing when to use each helps you manage your data views clearly and easily.
When you want to apply a filter to a worksheet but keep it hidden from viewers, use the Filter shelf.
When you want users to interact with the filter and choose values themselves, use the Filter card.
When you need to organize multiple filters neatly without cluttering the view, use the Filter shelf.
When you want to show filter options like dropdowns or sliders on the dashboard, use the Filter card.
When you want to quickly add or remove filters without changing the view layout, use the Filter shelf.
Steps
Step 1: Drag a field to the Filters shelf
- Data pane → Filters shelf
A filter dialog opens to select filter criteria; after selection, the filter applies but no filter control appears on the view
💡 Use this to filter data quietly without showing filter controls
Step 2: Right-click a field on the Filters shelf and select Show Filter
- Filters shelf
A Filter card appears on the right side of the worksheet showing filter options
💡 This makes the filter visible and interactive for users
Step 3: Use the Filter card to change filter type (e.g., single value dropdown, slider)
- Filter card dropdown menu
Filter control changes appearance and interaction style on the worksheet
💡 Choose the filter style that best fits your dashboard design
Step 4: Drag the Filter card to reposition it on the worksheet
- Filter card area on the right
Filter card moves to a new position for better layout
💡 Keep filters organized and easy to find
