When you want to show sales distribution by product category in a simple visual.
When you need to display market share percentages for different companies.
When you want to compare the proportion of expenses in a budget report.
When you want to highlight the biggest segment in customer feedback types.
When you want to present survey results showing preference shares.

Common Mistakes
Dragging only the dimension to the view without a measure
Pie charts need a measure to size slices; without it, Tableau cannot create proportions
Always include a measure on the Angle shelf to define slice sizes
Using too many categories in the pie chart
Too many slices make the chart cluttered and hard to read
Limit categories to a few main ones or group smaller categories into 'Other'
Summary
Pie charts show parts of a whole using slices sized by a measure.
In Tableau, use the Show Me panel to select Pie chart after placing dimension and measure.
Remember to keep categories few for clear, readable pie charts.
