Common Mistakes
Selecting the wrong file type when connecting (e.g., choosing Text file for an Excel file)
Tableau cannot properly read the file structure, causing errors or no data shown
Always pick 'Microsoft Excel' for .xlsx or .xls files and 'Text file' for .csv files
Not using Data Interpreter on complex Excel files
Data may appear messy with extra headers or formatting included
Turn on Data Interpreter to clean up the Excel file automatically
Ignoring data type mismatches in columns
Incorrect data types can cause errors in calculations or visualizations
Check and manually correct data types in the Data Source tab before analysis
Summary
Excel and CSV connections let you quickly load spreadsheet data into Tableau for analysis.
Choose the correct file type and use Data Interpreter for cleaner Excel data.
Always verify and adjust data types to ensure accurate visualizations.
