Context filters in Tableau - Step-by-Step Guide

Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
Context filters in Tableau help you control which data is used first before other filters. This makes your dashboard faster and lets you create filters that depend on each other.
When you want to filter sales data for a specific year before applying region filters.
When your dashboard needs to show only top customers based on a selected category.
When you want to improve performance by reducing data before applying many filters.
When you want one filter to affect the results of another filter.
When you want to create a filter that other filters depend on.
Steps
Step 1: Open your Tableau workbook
- Tableau Desktop main window
Your data and worksheets are visible
Step 2: Drag a field to the Filters shelf
- Filters shelf on the worksheet
Filter dialog opens to select filter criteria
Step 3: Select filter criteria and click OK
- Filter dialog
Filter is applied and visible on the Filters shelf
Step 4: Right-click the filter on the Filters shelf
- Filters shelf
Context menu appears
Step 5: Select 'Add to Context'
- Context menu of the filter
Filter turns gray and becomes a context filter; other filters now depend on it
Step 6: Observe the data update
- Worksheet view
Data is filtered first by the context filter, then by other filters
Before vs After
Before
All filters are independent; filtering by Region and Category applies filters separately on full data
After
Context filter on Year is applied first; Region and Category filters apply only to data from that Year
Settings Reference
Add to Context
📍 Right-click filter on Filters shelf
Makes the filter a context filter that other filters depend on
Default: Filter is not a context filter
Context Filters Order
📍 Filters shelf order
Controls the order in which context filters are applied
Default: Filters are applied in the order they appear
Common Mistakes
Adding too many filters to context
Context filters create a temporary table and too many can slow down performance
Add only necessary filters to context to improve performance and maintain clarity
Expecting context filters to update instantly
Context filters require Tableau to create a temporary table, which can take time
Be patient and refresh the view if needed after adding context filters
Summary
Context filters control the order of filtering by creating a base data set.
They improve performance and allow dependent filters.
Use context filters carefully to avoid slowing down your workbook.
