Interface overview (data pane, shelves, canvas) in Tableau - Step-by-Step Guide

Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
This feature helps you understand the main parts of Tableau's workspace. It shows where your data lives, where you build your views, and where you put fields to create charts. Knowing this helps you start making visual reports easily.
When you open Tableau for the first time and want to know where to find your data and build charts
When you want to drag fields to create a bar chart or map and need to know where to drop them
When you want to understand how to organize your workspace to build dashboards
When you want to find the data pane to select fields for analysis
When you want to know where the canvas is to see your chart as you build it
Steps
Step 1: Look at the left side of the Tableau window
- Data pane
You see a list of your data sources and fields like dimensions and measures
💡 Dimensions are usually categorical data like names; measures are numbers you can calculate
Step 2: Look at the top and sides of the workspace area
- Shelves (Columns, Rows, Filters, Marks card)
You see places where you can drag fields to build your chart structure and style
💡 Dragging a field to Columns or Rows creates the chart axes
Step 3: Look at the center of the screen
- Canvas
You see the visual chart or map that updates as you add or change fields
💡 This is where your data turns into pictures you can understand
Step 4: Click on a field in the Data pane and drag it to the Columns shelf
- Data pane and Columns shelf
The canvas updates to show a chart with that field on the horizontal axis
Step 5: Drag another field to the Rows shelf
- Rows shelf
The canvas updates to show the chart with vertical axis based on the new field
Before vs After
Before
Data pane shows all fields; shelves are empty; canvas is blank
After
Columns shelf has 'Category'; Rows shelf has 'Sales'; canvas shows a bar chart of sales by category
Settings Reference
Data pane
📍 Left side of Tableau workspace
Shows all available fields from your data source to use in your visualizations
Default: Dimensions and Measures visible
Shelves
📍 Top and sides of the workspace area
Place fields here to build and customize your charts
Default: Empty until fields are dragged
Canvas
📍 Center of the workspace
Displays the visual output of your data and field selections
Default: Blank until fields are added
Common Mistakes
Trying to build a chart without dragging fields to shelves
The canvas stays blank because Tableau needs fields placed on shelves to know what to show
Drag at least one field to Columns or Rows shelf to start building your chart
Confusing Dimensions and Measures in the Data pane
Using a measure as a dimension or vice versa can create unexpected chart results
Use Dimensions for categories and Measures for numeric calculations
Summary
The Data pane shows all your data fields organized as dimensions and measures.
Shelves are where you drag fields to build and customize your charts.
The canvas displays the visual chart that updates as you add or change fields.
