Introduction
Mark types in Tableau control how your data points appear on a chart. Choosing the right mark type helps you show your data clearly, like bars for comparisons or lines for trends.
When you want to compare sales amounts across different regions using bars.
When you want to show how monthly revenue changes over time with a line.
When you want to highlight individual data points with circles on a scatter plot.
When Tableau automatically picks a mark type but you want to customize it for clarity.
When you want to switch between different chart styles to find the best visual fit.

Common Mistakes
Leaving mark type on Automatic without checking if it fits your data
Automatic may choose a mark type that is not best for your data story
Manually select the mark type that best suits your data visualization goal
Choosing Line mark type for categorical data
Lines imply continuous data and trends, which can confuse categorical comparisons
Use Bar or Circle marks for categorical data to show clear differences
Summary
Mark types control how data points appear in Tableau charts.
Use Bar for comparisons, Line for trends, and Circle for individual points.
Always check and adjust mark type to best fit your data story.
