Before vs After
Before
A bar chart showing total sales by region only, with one bar per region
After
The same bar chart now includes product category as detail, so each bar splits into segments by category without changing the axis
Settings Reference
Detail shelf
πŸ“ Marks card
Adds extra granularity to marks without changing axes
Default: Empty (no extra detail)
Tooltip customization
πŸ“ Marks card β†’ Tooltip
Controls what detail information appears when hovering over marks
Default: Shows all fields on Detail and Tooltip shelves
Common Mistakes
Adding too many fields to Detail
This can clutter the view and make marks hard to read
Add only the most important detail fields that add meaningful insight
Confusing Detail with Color or Size
Detail adds granularity but does not change mark color or size, so users may miss the info
Use Color or Size shelves if you want to visually differentiate marks
Summary
Detail level of marks adds extra data fields to marks without changing the main axes.
It helps show more information per mark, improving insight without cluttering the chart.
Use Detail carefully to keep your visualization clear and easy to understand.
