Dimension filters in Tableau - Step-by-Step Guide

Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
Dimension filters let you choose which categories or groups to show in your Tableau view. This helps you focus on specific parts of your data, like only showing sales for certain products or regions.
When you want to display sales data only for the East and West regions on your dashboard.
When your report should show data for selected product categories, like Electronics and Furniture, excluding others.
When you need to create a view that focuses on customers from specific cities only.
When you want to exclude test or sample data entries from your analysis.
When you want to create a filter control so users can pick which departments to see in a report.
Steps
Step 1: Open your Tableau workbook
- Tableau Desktop main window
Your data and worksheets are visible
💡 Make sure your data source is connected and loaded
Step 2: Drag the dimension you want to filter on
- Data pane on the left
The dimension appears on Rows or Columns shelf or in the view
💡 For example, drag 'Region' to Rows to see regions listed
Step 3: Right-click the dimension field in the view or Data pane
- Dimension field (e.g., 'Region')
A context menu appears
💡 You can also click the drop-down arrow next to the field
Step 4: Select 'Show Filter' from the menu
- Context menu for the dimension field
A filter card appears on the right side of the worksheet
💡 This filter card lets you pick which dimension values to show
Step 5: Use the filter card to select or deselect dimension values
- Filter card on the right
The view updates to show only the selected dimension values
💡 Try selecting only 'East' and 'West' to filter regions
Step 6: Customize the filter card display
- Filter card drop-down menu
You can change filter type (single value, multiple values, dropdown, etc.)
💡 Choose 'Single Value (dropdown)' for a compact filter control
Before vs After
Before
The view shows sales data for all regions: East, West, North, and South.
After
The view shows sales data only for East and West regions after applying the dimension filter.

Common Mistakes
Applying a dimension filter but not showing the filter card
Users cannot change the filter selections interactively without the filter card.
Always use 'Show Filter' to add the filter card so users can pick dimension values.
Using a measure field instead of a dimension for filtering categories
Measures are numeric and do not filter categories directly.
Use dimension fields like 'Region' or 'Category' for dimension filters.
Not setting 'Apply to Worksheets' correctly when multiple sheets use the same data
Filter changes may not apply to all relevant worksheets, causing inconsistent views.
Use 'Apply to Worksheets > All Using This Data Source' to keep filters consistent.
