Introduction
This feature helps you find and use the main parts of Google Sheets: the toolbar, formula bar, and sheet tabs. These parts let you enter data, use formulas, and switch between different sheets in your file.
When you want to type or edit a formula in your spreadsheet
When you need to quickly apply formatting like bold or colors using the toolbar
When you want to switch between different sheets in the same file
When you want to add or rename sheets to organize your data
When you want to see or change the formula used in a selected cell
Steps
Step 1: Look at the top of the screen
- Toolbar area
You see buttons for actions like undo, redo, print, text formatting, and inserting charts
💡 Hover over each button to see a tooltip explaining what it does
Step 2: Click on a cell in the spreadsheet
- Main grid area
The cell is selected and its content or formula appears in the formula bar above
💡 You can also press the arrow keys to move between cells
Step 3: Look just above the grid and below the toolbar
- Formula bar
You see the content or formula of the selected cell displayed here
💡 Click inside the formula bar to edit the cell's content or formula
Step 4: Look at the bottom of the screen
- Sheet tabs area
You see tabs named Sheet1, Sheet2, etc., representing different sheets in your file
💡 Click a tab to switch to that sheet
Step 5: Right-click on a sheet tab
- Sheet tabs area
A menu appears with options like Rename, Delete, Duplicate, and Add new sheet
💡 Use Rename to give your sheet a meaningful name
Before vs After
Before
The spreadsheet shows one sheet named Sheet1 with data in cells A1 to C5. The formula bar is visible but empty because no cell is selected.
After
After clicking cell B2, the formula bar shows the formula or value in B2. The toolbar buttons are ready to use. The sheet tabs area shows Sheet1 and a new sheet named Budget.

Common Mistakes
Trying to type a formula directly in the cell without selecting it first
You must select the cell first to see or edit its content in the formula bar
Click the cell once to select it, then type in the formula bar or directly in the cell
Confusing sheet tabs with browser tabs
Sheet tabs are inside the Google Sheets file and switch between sheets, not browser pages
Look at the bottom of the Google Sheets window to find sheet tabs
Not noticing the toolbar buttons because they are small
Toolbar buttons are small icons but have tooltips to explain them
Hover your mouse over each button to see its name and function
