Introduction
SolidWorks is a software tool used to create 3D models and drawings. It helps engineers and designers make detailed plans for products and parts. This tool solves the problem of visualizing and testing designs before making physical versions.
When you need to design a new product part with precise measurements.
When you want to create a 3D model to show how a product will look.
When you need to test if parts fit together before manufacturing.
When you want to create technical drawings for production.
When you need to simulate how a design will perform under stress.
Steps
Step 1: Open
- SolidWorks main window
The start page appears with options to create new files or open existing ones
Step 2: Click
- New Document icon
A dialog box opens asking to choose the type of document: Part, Assembly, or Drawing
Step 3: Select
- Part option in the New Document dialog
A blank workspace opens for creating a 3D part model
Step 4: Use
- Sketch toolbar
You can draw 2D shapes that form the base of your 3D model
Step 5: Click
- Features tab and select Extruded Boss/Base
The 2D sketch is turned into a 3D solid shape
Step 6: Save
- File menu > Save As
Your 3D model is saved on your computer for future use
Before vs After
Before
A blank workspace with no shapes or models
After
A 3D solid model created from a 2D sketch using extrusion
Settings Reference
Document Properties
📍 Tools menu > Options > Document Properties tab
Set measurement units and drawing standards for your project
Default: Millimeters for units
Feature Manager Design Tree
📍 Left panel in the main window
Manage and organize the parts and features of your model
Default: Visible
View Orientation
📍 Heads-up View toolbar

Default: Isometric
Common Mistakes
Starting a new file without selecting the correct document type
The workspace and tools differ for parts, assemblies, and drawings
Always choose Part, Assembly, or Drawing based on what you want to create
Not setting the correct units before starting the design
Measurements will be incorrect, causing errors in the final product
Set units in Document Properties before drawing or modeling
Summary
SolidWorks is a 3D design software used to create and test product models.
It helps visualize parts and assemblies before manufacturing.
Choosing the right document type and units is important to start correctly.
