Sketch trim and extend in Solidworks - Step-by-Step Guide

Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
Sketch trim and extend tools help you clean up and adjust sketch lines quickly. They let you remove extra parts or lengthen lines to meet other sketch elements, making your sketches neat and ready for 3D modeling.
When you want to remove overlapping or extra sketch lines that are not needed.
When you need to shorten a line so it stops exactly at another line or curve.
When you want to lengthen a line to meet another sketch element without redrawing.
When cleaning up complex sketches to prepare for features like extrude or cut.
When adjusting sketches to fix small gaps or overlaps before creating 3D shapes.
Steps
Step 1: Click
- Sketch tab > Trim Entities tool
The cursor changes to a trim icon, ready to trim sketch lines
💡 Hover over lines to see which parts will be trimmed before clicking
Step 2: Click
- Sketch line segment to trim
The selected part of the line is removed up to the nearest intersecting sketch element
💡 If multiple trim options appear, choose the correct one by clicking carefully
Step 3: Click
- Sketch tab > Extend Entities tool
The cursor changes to an extend icon, ready to lengthen sketch lines
💡 Use this when you want to lengthen a line to meet another line or curve
Step 4: Click
- Sketch line segment to extend
The line extends to meet the nearest sketch element
💡 Make sure the line can logically extend to another element; otherwise, no change occurs
Step 5: Press
- Escape key or click Exit Sketch
Exit trim or extend mode and return to normal sketch editing
Before vs After
Before
Sketch has overlapping lines and lines that do not meet cleanly, causing gaps and extra segments
After
Sketch lines are trimmed to remove overlaps and extended to meet other lines, creating a clean, connected sketch
Settings Reference
Trim Type
📍 Trim Entities property manager
Controls how the trim tool behaves when cutting sketch lines
Default: Power Trim
Extend Direction
📍 Extend Entities property manager
Determines how the extend tool finds the target to extend the line to
Default: Extend to Nearest
Common Mistakes
Trying to trim lines that are not intersecting with others
Trim only works where lines intersect or overlap; otherwise, no change happens
Ensure lines cross or overlap before trimming, or use other sketch tools to adjust
Extending lines beyond the intended sketch elements
Extend tool only works to the nearest intersecting element; extending beyond is not possible
Check sketch layout and add necessary lines or points to extend lines properly
Summary
Trim and extend tools help clean and adjust sketch lines quickly.
Trim removes extra parts of lines; extend lengthens lines to meet others.
Use these tools only where lines intersect or can logically connect.
