Performance considerations in Tableau - Step-by-Step Guide

Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
This feature helps you make your Tableau dashboards and reports run faster. It solves the problem of slow loading and lagging visuals by guiding you to optimize your work.
When your dashboard takes too long to load and users get impatient
When you want to improve the refresh speed of live data connections
When your workbook has many complex calculations slowing down performance
When you notice slow filter responses on large datasets
When you want to reduce the size of your Tableau file for easier sharing
Steps
Step 1: Click
- Help menu > Settings and Performance > Start Performance Recording
Tableau starts recording the time taken for each action you perform
💡 Use this to identify which parts of your workbook are slow
Step 2: Interact with your dashboard as usual
- Dashboard view
Performance data is collected for each interaction
Step 3: Click
- Help menu > Settings and Performance > Stop Performance Recording
A new performance workbook opens showing detailed timings for each step
Step 4: Review
- Performance workbook's Summary and Events sheets
You see which queries, calculations, or rendering steps take the most time
Step 5: Optimize
- Your original workbook by simplifying calculations, reducing filters, or using extracts
Dashboard performance improves with faster load and interaction times
Before vs After
Before
Dashboard takes 15 seconds to load and filters respond slowly after selection
After
Dashboard loads in 5 seconds and filters update instantly after optimization
Settings Reference
Performance Recording
📍 Help menu > Settings and Performance
To measure and analyze dashboard performance
Default: Off
Data Source Type
📍 Data pane when connecting to data
Extracts improve speed by storing data locally
Default: Live connection
Filters
📍 Filters shelf on worksheets
Context filters reduce data early to speed up queries
Default: No filters
Calculation Type
📍 Calculated fields editor
Aggregate calculations are faster and reduce data load
Default: Row-level calculations
Common Mistakes
Using too many quick filters on large datasets
Each quick filter adds extra queries and slows down dashboard
Use context filters or reduce the number of quick filters
Keeping live connections when data rarely changes
Live connections query the database every time, causing delays
Use data extracts to speed up data loading
Creating complex row-level calculations unnecessarily
Row-level calculations process every row and slow performance
Use aggregate calculations or pre-aggregate data in the source
Summary
Performance considerations help make Tableau dashboards faster and smoother.
Use performance recording to find slow parts and optimize them.
Reducing filters, using extracts, and simplifying calculations improve speed.
