Visual-level filters in Power BI - Step-by-Step Guide

Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
Visual-level filters let you control what data appears in a single chart or visual. This helps you focus on specific parts of your data without changing other visuals on the report page.
When you want a sales chart to show only data for one product category without affecting other charts.
When you need to display customer data for a specific region in one visual but keep all regions visible elsewhere.
When you want to highlight data from a particular year in a single visual on your dashboard.
When you want to compare filtered data side-by-side with unfiltered data in different visuals.
When you want to test how a visual looks with only a subset of data before applying filters globally.
Steps
Step 1: Select
- the visual you want to filter on the report canvas
The visual is highlighted and its options appear in the Filters pane
Step 2: Open
- Filters pane on the right side of Power BI Desktop
You see filter options for the selected visual
Step 3: Drag
- a field from the Fields list into the Visual level filters area in the Filters pane

The visual changes dynamically to reflect the new filter

Common Mistakes
Applying a visual-level filter but expecting it to affect other visuals on the page.
Visual-level filters only affect the selected visual, not the entire report or page.
Use page-level or report-level filters if you want to filter multiple visuals at once.
Dragging a field to the Filters pane but not to the Visual level filters section.
If the field is added to page-level or report-level filters, it won't filter just the selected visual.
Make sure to drag the field specifically into the Visual level filters area.
Summary
Visual-level filters control data shown in a single visual without affecting others.
You add filters by dragging fields into the Visual level filters area in the Filters pane.
Remember, these filters only impact the selected visual, not the whole report or page.
