Choose your learning style9 modes available
Introduction
A gauge visual shows progress toward a goal using a dial or meter. It helps you quickly see how close a number is to a target, like sales made versus sales goal.
When you want to display sales progress toward a monthly target on a dashboard
When you need to show how much of a budget has been spent compared to the total budget
When tracking project completion percentage visually for easy understanding
When you want to highlight performance metrics like customer satisfaction scores against a benchmark
When you want a simple, clear visual to show if a key number is on track or behind
Steps
Step 1: Click
- Visualizations pane
The gauge visual icon is highlighted and a blank gauge appears on the report canvas
πŸ’‘ Hover over icons to see their names if unsure which is the gauge
Step 2: Drag the numeric field you want to measure
- Fields pane to the Gauge visual's 'Value' well
The gauge dial shows the current value based on your data
πŸ’‘ Use a measure or numeric column that represents the current progress
Step 3: Drag the target or goal field
- Fields pane to the Gauge visual's 'Target value' well
The gauge shows a marker indicating the goal on the dial
πŸ’‘ If you don’t have a target field, you can set a fixed target in the format settings
Step 4: Click the Format (paint roller) icon
- Visualizations pane
Format options for the gauge appear
πŸ’‘ Use this to customize colors, min/max values, and labels
Step 5: Set minimum and maximum values
- Format pane under 'Gauge axis'
The gauge scale adjusts to your specified range
πŸ’‘ Set min to 0 and max to your goal for clear progress visualization
Step 6: Turn on data labels
- Format pane under 'Data label'
The current value appears as a number on the gauge
πŸ’‘ This helps viewers see the exact number along with the dial
Before vs After
Before
The report canvas shows no visual or a blank space where the gauge will be
After
The gauge visual displays a dial with a needle showing current value and a marker for the target, plus numeric labels

Common Mistakes
Not setting the maximum value to match the target
The gauge scale may be misleading if max is too high or too low, making progress look incorrect
Set the maximum value in the format settings to the target goal for accurate visualization
Using a non-numeric field in the Value or Target wells
The gauge visual requires numbers to display progress; text fields cause errors or no display
Always use numeric columns or measures for Value and Target fields
Not turning on data labels
Viewers may not know the exact value the gauge shows, reducing clarity
Enable data labels in the format pane to show the numeric value on the gauge

Gauge visuals show progress toward a goal using a dial and needle.
Set numeric fields for current value and target to display progress clearly.
