Timeline charts in Google Sheets - Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction
Timeline charts help you show events or tasks over time in a clear, visual way. They make it easy to see when things start and end, which is useful for planning or tracking projects.
When you want to show a project schedule with start and end dates for each task.
When you need to visualize a sequence of events over days, weeks, or months.

When you want to track progress of tasks over time in a simple chart.

Steps
Step 1: Enter your data with columns for Task Name, Start Date, and End Date
- Google Sheets spreadsheet cells
Your tasks and their start and end dates are listed in the sheet
Step 2: Select the range of your data including Task Name, Start Date, and End Date
- Spreadsheet cells containing your timeline data
The data range is highlighted and ready for chart creation
Step 3: Click Insert > Chart from the menu

A chart editor panel opens and a default chart appears on the sheet
Step 4: In the Chart editor, click on Chart type dropdown

Common Mistakes
Selecting only the task names without start and end dates before inserting the chart
The timeline chart needs start and end dates to show durations, so it cannot build the timeline correctly
Always select the full data range including task names, start dates, and end dates before creating the chart
Entering dates as text instead of date format in the cells
Timeline charts rely on date values to position bars correctly; text dates are not recognized as dates
Make sure to enter dates using date format or use the DATE function to create valid dates
