Sheet protection in Excel - Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction
Sheet protection helps you stop others from changing your worksheet by locking cells or the whole sheet. It is useful when you want to keep your data safe and avoid accidental edits.
When you share a budget sheet and want to prevent others from changing formulas.
When you create a form in Excel and want users to fill only specific cells.
When you prepare a report and want to keep the layout and data intact.
When you want to stop accidental deletion of important data in your worksheet.
When you want to allow users to sort or filter data but not edit the content.
Steps
Step 1: Select the cells you want users to be able to edit

💡 By default, all cells are locked, so unlock the cells you want editable before protecting the sheet
Step 2: Right-click the selected cells and choose Format Cells

Step 3: Click the Protection tab and uncheck Locked

Selected cells are unlocked and can be edited after sheet protection
💡 Unlock only the cells users should change
Step 4: Click OK to close the Format Cells dialog

Step 5: Go to the Review tab and click Protect Sheet

Step 6: Type a password if you want to require one to unprotect the sheet

💡 Remember your password; if lost, you cannot unprotect the sheet
Step 7: Check or uncheck permissions like Select locked cells or Format columns

Permissions are set for what users can do on the protected sheet
Step 8: Click OK to apply sheet protection

Common Mistakes
Not unlocking cells before protecting the sheet
All cells remain locked and users cannot edit any cell
Unlock the cells you want users to edit by unchecking Locked in Format Cells before protecting the sheet
Forgetting the password set for sheet protection
You cannot unprotect the sheet without the password and may lose access to editing
Store the password safely or leave it blank if you do not want to use a password
Assuming protection stops all changes including workbook structure
Sheet protection only protects the current sheet; workbook structure protection is separate
Use Protect Workbook feature to protect workbook structure if needed
