Metrics & Evaluation - Dropout layers
Which metric matters for Dropout layers and WHY

Dropout layers help prevent overfitting by randomly turning off some neurons during training. To check if dropout works well, we look at validation loss and validation accuracy. These show how well the model performs on new data it hasn't seen before. If validation metrics improve or stay stable while training metrics improve, dropout is helping.

Confusion matrix example

For classification tasks using dropout, the confusion matrix helps us see how many predictions are correct or wrong:

      Actual \ Predicted | Positive | Negative
      -------------------|----------|---------
      Positive | TP=85 | FN=15
      Negative | FP=10 | TN=90

From this, we calculate precision, recall, and accuracy to understand model quality.

Precision vs Recall tradeoff with Dropout

Dropout reduces overfitting, which can improve both precision and recall by making the model generalize better. For example:

  • High precision: Model rarely makes false positive mistakes (good for spam detection).
  • High recall: Model finds most true positives (important for disease detection).

Dropout helps balance this by preventing the model from memorizing training data, so it performs well on unseen data.

Good vs Bad metric values for Dropout use

Good: Validation accuracy close to training accuracy, and validation loss not increasing. For example, training accuracy 90%, validation accuracy 88%, validation loss stable.

Bad: Validation accuracy much lower than training accuracy, or validation loss increasing while training loss decreases. This means overfitting, and dropout might be too low or not working.

Common pitfalls with Dropout metrics
  • Accuracy paradox: High accuracy but poor generalization if data is imbalanced.
  • Data leakage: Validation data accidentally used in training can hide overfitting.
  • Overfitting indicators: Large gap between training and validation accuracy or loss.
  • Dropout rate too high: Can cause underfitting, lowering both training and validation accuracy.
Self-check question

Your model with dropout has 98% training accuracy but only 12% recall on fraud cases in validation. Is it good?

Answer: No. The very low recall means the model misses most fraud cases. Dropout might not be enough or the model needs better tuning to catch fraud. High training accuracy with low recall shows overfitting and poor generalization.

Key Result
Dropout effectiveness is best judged by stable validation loss and accuracy close to training metrics, indicating reduced overfitting.
